Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology

BSH received international recognition for Minimally Invasive Gynecology by the Surgical Review Corporation and American Laparoscopy Association (AAGL).

Recently the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), and American Laparoscopy Association (AAGL), an independent healthcare quality organization and the world-leading administrator of Center of Excellence programs for surgery specialties, designated the Gynecology department at Bahrain Specialist Hospital as a Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology (COEMIG™).  This is given to those hospitals and surgeons that meet specific quality and practice criteria following a comprehensive evaluation of hospital facilities, policies, procedures, and patient outcomes, worldwide. Appointed by the Surgical Review Corporation, Gynecological department at Bahrain Specialist Hospital joins the small group of nearly 170 out of the 5,185 registered hospitals worldwide, and 440 surgeons that hold this award.

Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery is any surgical technique that uses small incisions and results in rapid recovery, decreased blood loss, shorter length of stay in the hospital and less post-operative pain.  At BSH, our gynecologic surgeons perform a variety of minimally invasive surgery options for both benign and malignant cases, with the most advanced, state-of-art, minimal invasive gynecological surgery.

Director of Center of Minimally Invasive Gynecology program at Bahrain Specialist Hospital, Dr. Murat KOC, Consultant ob/gyn and gynecological oncology stated, “We are honored to be named as a first Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology in Bahrain. Recently from Europe to GCC Region we are the certified second center between of around 100 certified hospitals worldwide. This program is the result of the dedication that we have to providing the highest quality minimally invasive gynecology services to our patients. We are proud of our program and will continue to uphold the standard of excellence here at BSH Hospital in Bahrain.

As the highest volume and advanced provider of minimal invasive gynecological surgery, and the first multidisciplinary program of its kind in Bahrain, Bahrain Specialist Hospital Center of Excellence in Minimal Invasive Gynecology Program provides a patient-centered, integrated team approach to gynecologic surgical care using advanced laparoscopic surgeries, evidence-based medicine, progressive technology and innovative treatment options in world-class.

This prestigious recognition is a direct result of the work of the hospital facility, their individual international trained and highly specialized surgeons, in their field. The Surgical Review Corporation only considers health facilities and their associated surgeons who demonstrate high-quality preoperative, individualized, latest advance patient care, and technique and have completed the designating process. After exhibiting competency in numerous fields, and completing an evaluation, Bahrain Specialist Hospital received a “Center of Excellence in Minimal Invasive Gynecology program certification. Surgeons Dr. Murat Koc and Prof. Dr. Salam Jibrel were influential in obtaining the appointment.

The Director of the new Center at BSH Dr. Murat Koc stated “To receive the distinction, centers must display commitment to the field, with highly specialized advanced laparoscopic gynecological surgeons, as demonstrated by a high surgical volume, adherence to safety standards, low complication rates and a consistent surgical team under the direction of board-certified surgeons trained in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. In the meantime this allows us to establish a training center for surgeons.

"This designation highlights the fact that our center exceeds what other hospitals and gynecologists are able to offer in Bahrain and is committed to helping women obtain the best care possible," said Dr. Kasim Ardati CEO of BSH Hospital.

Minimally invasive surgery makes use of tools and techniques such as laparoscopy, hysteroscopy and robotic surgery to perform surgical procedures with smaller incisions or no incisions, which typically translates to less pain and speedier recoveries for patients. This are provided for advanced endometriosis, uterine fibroids, complex ovarian cysts, hysterectomies and for some gynecological cancers, or individualized for each eligible patient. Even if future fertility is no longer a goal, a minimally invasive approach is almost always feasible for hysterectomy, treatment of ovarian cysts, abnormal bleeding, pelvic pain and prolapse.

"We want to make sure we do what is best for our patient" said Dr. Murat Koc consultant of obstetrics and gynecology, gynecological oncology director of the new Center of Excellence. "Historically, most surgeries were performed through large incisions, but almost all gynecologic surgeries can be performed through a minimally invasive approach. In spite of this, over half of surgeries in the community are still performed through large incisions, so we strongly advocate patient education and awareness of their options and we empower women to ask questions and seek the least invasive solutions for their gynecologic problems."
The magnification and high-definition technology used in minimally invasive surgery also enables surgeons to pinpoint abnormalities and find subtle pathology that cannot be seen during traditional open surgery.

"At the end of the day it is the patient who is reaping the benefits," Dr. Murat said. "Our patients are getting excellent care. Physicians who earn COEMIG designation must meet stringent criteria based on their individual expertise and experience. Being a Center of Excellence recognizes the importance of our experience worldwide and the quality of care that we provide.

Offering easier, less invasive options for treating gynecologic conditions, Bahrain Specialist Hospital Center of Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery (COEMIG) program uses advanced technology to provide state-of-the-art care for women in Bahrain. International board-certified gynecological surgeons are trained in the latest minimally invasive surgical techniques, including laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery.
