A Unique Case of Fungal Disease of the Nose/Sinus Affecting the Eye and Brain

Fungal Rhinosinusitis: Ocular & Cerebral Invasion

Bahrain Specialist Hospital presents a patient’s success story thanks to the combined efforts of the multidisciplinary team approach at BSH. The patient presented with a long-standing discharge from the nose with an abnormal bulging of her left eyeball. Any further delay of treatment at this stage could lead to serious complications, therefore, a CT and MRI scan of her nose, brain, and eyes were conducted. The tests showed a complex problem in her sinuses extending to the left eye socket as well as to the brain. Together with Dr. Rashu Mittal - ENT Surgeon, Dr. Joe Mariadas - Neurosurgeon, and Dr. Fatema Al Mukhtar - Oculoplastic Surgeon, a surgical plan was developed to deal with the problem from the inside of the nose as well as from the skull. As planned, endoscopic removal of the nose and sinus part was performed initially. This was followed by the removal of the disease from the side of the skull and eye socket. An immediate return of the eyeball to its normal position was noted. The result showed a rare species of fungi in the sinus that tends to grow larger with time and may lead to a variety of complications in the eyes and brain, as was the case with this patient. Fortunately, the surgery went quite smoothly thanks to the skill and dedication of the entire surgical team.
